Emotional & Psychological Listening in Scenes
Most people will agree that one of the most important (if not THE most important) elements of Improvisation is Listening. In this workshop I will show you how to listen more deeply in scenes beyond a literal, linear or strategic level that simply builds on responding to your scene partner’s words. I will show you how to be present and responsive on an Emotional and Psychological level so that you can collaborate in the realm of the UNSPOKEN reality of the scene. You will learn some tools to help you pay attention to HOW you are behaving with and responding to each other. It’s HOW you pay attention to the unspoken in the scene that often gives your character a greater depth from which you can play. The other set of tools are for building a vocabulary to strengthen HOW you respond and verbally acknowledge what is going on, on an emotional and psychological level with the characters that are present. Your play in improv scenes AND games can have more depth, believability & layers of funny when you are in solid connection to the world of the unspoken between characters.
This class will be located in the main theater at Curious Comedy Theater (5250 NE MLK BLVD).
Saturday February 24th 1:00PM - 4:00PM
In this workshop you will do lots of scenes, LOTS of them! We’ll warm up with short scenes and then we’ll start looking at scenes through this progression of ideas:
1) How did the scene begin? (The First 5/15/30 seconds)
2) What is available to help you forward the scene, the dialogue, the rhythm & tone, the emotion, the action.
3) What are the patterns and what is the scene about?
4) Recognizing the clues in the beginning that help you find the ending.
5) HOW are YOU present in the scene, from beginning through the middle and to the end.
I’ll touch on techniques from different approaches to Improvisation and give some personal feedback about tendencies I see. I’ll also share ideas to help you purposely break out of unproductive habits and into inspiration, focus and fun.
This class will be located at the Blazer's Boys & Girls Club (5250 NE MLK BLVD), across the street from Curious Comedy Theater.
