The Three E's: Environment, Environment, Environment with Landon Kirksey

$30.00 | 1 class

Sometimes our scenes end up being two bodies floating awkwardly in space. In this workshop we’ll focus on where you are and how your environment can influence your point of view, encourage discovery, and focus your brain. A scene between a parent and a rebellious teen can be different on a submarine than in doctor’s office and we’ll work to find what role the environment can play. We’ll also focus on building out these worlds through object work to really make them real so we’ll never have talking heads scenes again! Taught by visiting teacher Landon Kirksey.

Landon Kirksey has been improvising for 15 years, beginning his education at The Second City in Chicago and continuing to perform at io Chicago, The PIT in New York City, Dallas Comedy House and Four Day Weekend in Fort Worth, Texas where he also served as Director of Education. He is currently a cast member of the award winning Mission IMPROVable ensemble and a core faculty member of The Westside Comedy Theater in Santa Monica, California.

The Rhythm of the Scene with Asaf Ronen

$40.00 | 1 class

How we are with each other defines who we are to each other. That can define the scene. Using some clowning and organic improv techniques, students will learn to give up all sense of narrative in favor of listening to the heartbeat of the scene, the rhythm of the routine that is being established. The end results will be in many cases odd and/or delightful and populated with huge amounts of subtext and character depth that can come from no other source.

Asaf Ronen is the Education Director of The Institution Theater where he also regularly performs, teaches and produces. He has also taught and performed improvisation in Canada, Great Britain, Norway and in twenty-eight of these United States with such groups as the B. Iden Payne Award winning Confidence Men (improvised plays in the style of David Mamet) and imp (mostly silent improv). He was also producer on TRUST US, THIS IS ALL MADE UP, a documentary on legendary improvisers TJ & Dave that premiered at Austin’s South by Southwest Festival in 2009. He is the author of Directing Improv: Show the Way By Getting Out of the Way. In 2000, Asaf worked with Cirque du Soleil as a scout for improvisational talent.

JTS Brown: Two Day Workshop Intensive with Nick Armstrong

$80.00 | 1 class

This two-day intensive is designed to give you a basic understanding of the “form” known as "J.T.S. Brown". "J.T.S. Brown" is one of the most artistic and abstract forms in improv. We use the word “form” loosely as it’s not so much a form and more a philosophy of play. It was designed for a large cast (10-17 people), to involve as many players as possible at a time, to have a higher level of theatricality and polish than a typical improv show, and to encourage any move to be made at any time, with the idea that anything that happened was the perfect thing to happen. There isn’t a set structure and it’s infused with some short-form style moves.

More can be read about the JTS Brown here: https://wiki.improvresourcecenter.com/index.php?title=J.T.S._Brown

Nick Armstrong is an Actor, Improvisor and Writer living in Los Angeles, CA. On TV Nick has been on the Emmy-Award winning shows The Office and Grey’s Anatomy. He has also made appearances on Jimmy Kimmel Live, New Girl, Hot in Cleveland and Parks and Recreation. He also plays Cliff on Stan Against Evil. Nick has trained at The Groundlings and iO West. He is an alum of The Sunday Company at the Groundlings and currently performs at the M.I.’s Westside Comedy Theater with LA’s Critically acclaimed Harold team King Ten. Nick is currently the Artistic Director of Mi’s Westside Comedy Theater and teaches and performs there. He has also taught improv at iO West, The Groundlings, The Pack Theater and has done workshops all over the world. Nick is the Camp Director and Founder of Camp Improv Utopia a a 501(c) (3) Non Profit improv retreat for grown ups. He is also one of the founding members of the The Improv Network. For more information visit: http://www.nickarmstrong.com OR http://www.improvutopia.com.

This intensive will be eight hours long over two consecutive days on Saturday, July 28th and Sunday, July 29th from 1:00pm - 5:00pm. The intensive will culminate in a 25 minute J.T.S. Brown set in "Sunday School" at Curious Comedy Theater on Sunday night at 6pm.

Grounded Not Boring with Josh Nicols

$35.00 | 1 class

We often work so hard to be funny. We treat funny like it is the finish line in improv. It only makes things harder. Being a real, relatable human on stage makes the audience lean forward and connect. Every style of improv can benefit from realistic choices. In this workshop, I give you the tools and tweaks for your play that make your scenes consistently interesting and yes, funny.

Josh Nicols is a founder of Spectacles Improv Engine in Fullerton Ca. He is the director of The Orange County Improv Festival and founder and former director of the The Improv Cup. He has been performing improv for 24 years and coaching/teaching for a decade. Josh seeks out opportunities to learn from improv's greatest luminaries. He has studied under instructors from iO West & Chicago, The Annoyance Theater, Groundlings, Second City, UCB & The Pack Theater. Josh is the creator of Spectacles Improv Engine's unique focus based curriculum. He teaches with a concentration on organic, in-the-moment improvisation which can help build confidence on stage and off. He directed the improvised play The Awkward Party which was recognized as the 2017 Best Play in the OC by OC Weekly Magazine.
He has proudly taught as a Master Teacher at Camp Improv Utopia, Off The Cuff in Cedar City, The Torch in Phoenix, Finest City Improv in San Diego, For The City of Rancho Cucamonga, The Jewish Federation and Family Services, Crittenton, Agile Project Management and The Coup De Comedy Festival.

"Josh is a very insightful, compassionate and knowledgeable teacher. He makes all students feel valued and encouraged. He is an incandescent light and his teaching style is relaxed and sharp. I recommend Josh as a devoted and intelligent leader." - Juliette Saunders, M.A., Educator

"Without his patience I wouldn't be where I am today. His training and teaching has been the basis of all my improv, any success I've had is directly because of him." - Joey Shope

"There's definitely not anyone I've met who cares MORE about spreading improv and teaching people how to both improvise and enjoy it for the artform that it is. He has found the sweet spot for giving people constructive notes that make us still feel supported and give us a goal to work on. I believe he has something to offer everyone from brand new learners to seasoned improvisers because of his fundamental understanding of improv basics up through deep improv theory are top notch. Whether someone needs to learn stage picture, bring a brick, or just wants to talk improv for 4 hours with a guy who knows his stuff, he is always a good guy to bounce thoughts off of regarding improv. I've never had a note from him that I didn't end up agreeing with (right away or eventually) and that's something I really respect. I hope more people get to learn from Josh because people need to see how simultaneously rich and accessible improv is. I see him teach it every week, and the lessons I've learned from his classes have reached into every area of my life. Confidence, Listening, Status, and Teamwork are all skills that I've improved heavily since taking his classes. He was the right teacher to get me to stick with improv and I really appreciate that the most." - Cody P. Student
