Unique Characters & Communication with Seth Thomas

$35.00 | 1 class

1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Viola Spolin taught “the techniques of the theater are the techniques of communicating.” In this synthesized version of his popular Second City Chicago course, Seth Thomas of The Defiant Thomas Brothers teaches useful techniques for developing unique characters. Drawing from the 24 major nonverbal communication codes displayed by every character – consciously or unconsciously, you can learn to isolate and manipulate the postures, gestures, and movement patterns to create characters ready to play.

Seth Thomas is a comedian-rapper-teacher and one half of the award winning comedy duo the Defiant Thomas Brothers. As a comedian, Seth has performed in several productions including Tales From The Blackside and Talented Tenth with Congo Square Theater as well as performed stand-up around the greater Chicagoland area. As a rapper, Seth has recorded five solo albums - Patna Music 1-5 - as well as two albums as a member of hip hop duo 8090. As a teacher, Seth works in the Advanced Improvisation and Conservatory departments at The Second City, Chicago. Seth is also a diehard Dixie Chicks fan and a doyen of The Hills.

DTB BIO:
The Defiant Thomas Brothers are an American comedy duo known for their fearless approach to material about race, stereotypes, and human nature. From their infamous “Jews” song, to a drug-deal remake of Abbott and Costello’s “Who’s on First,” they deftly ride the line of off-color comedy with sketches that are polished, commanding, and often provocative.
Seth (a black guy from Oakland, California) and Paul (a white guy from Onalaska, Wisconsin) have been an untouchable force in Chicago for over a decade. The unique camaraderie between the two writer/actors makes for relatable characters, smart comedy, and laughs you don’t expect. Their auto-biographical humor couples with an original recorded soundtrack, making every DTB show an entirely Defiant experience.
